Mediums - oil and digital printmaking

Artist's Statement -Swaying marsh grasses, views from a car window, a lone figure in a boat–all under big changing skies: these are the things I paint about. Rich transparent glazes laid over scumbles of thicker paint create an illusion of depth and space. The method is old and careful and allows me to pin the mood of a landscape like a butterfly under glass. Recent paintings describe the layering of visual and emotional impressions of these opposite ends of the Gulf Coast. The use of frames painted to continue the canvas suggest a parallel, subtly differing color and place. An artist friend visiting the studio remarked that these works reminded her of how it looks to see a landscape through a car windshield, and also through the rear window at the same time. Which is probably how landscape is most often viewed today. Together with the further selective photographic process, which Downing-White uses to gain information, the resulting imagery as an amalgam of document and remembered image, chance and choice, filtered through the present and the past. Like songs and stories, some of the works are semi-autobiographical, others are about other people, places or events.

Biography - Susan Downing-White lives and works in Mobile, Alabama and finds the motifs for her paintings in the coastal scenery of that area. Her childhood was divided between life in South Florida and summer visits to family on the Magnolia River. She remembers the first painting she ever saw, a portrait of her great-great grandmother, and has been hooked on oil painting ever since.
