Mediums - Watercolor

Artist's Statement -My current work focuses on realistic watercolors of signs, fences, rusted metal and other industrial subjects. Employing atypical perspectives and compositions I attempt to make the ordinary visually interesting, and attempt to straddle the seam where representation meets the abstract.

Biography - Joe Santos was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1965. He was exposed to art at a very early age by his father, artist, Phillip Santos. It was his father who bought Joe his first set of watercolors, and he has been obsessed with the medium ever since. Joe lived in Los Angeles until the age of 5 when his family moved to Eastern Washington. After graduating from Pasco High School, Joe, attended Golden West College in Southern California (1984-1986) where he studied art technique and design while also working in his fathers art studio. Joe started working exclusively in watercolor in the late 80's and in 1999 started to paint the steel and industrial subjects that he is known for. Inspired by the Precisionism art movement, Santos sites Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth as influences. Joe has exhibited his work in over 20 national exhibitions, and has been included and won awards in some of the nations most prestigious watercolor exhibitions.
