Mediums - bas-relief & egg tempera Paintings
Artist's Statement -Medium: Bas-relief sculpture & egg tempera fresco
I am the sole creator of my bas-relief sculpture and egg tempera fresco paintings. I combine the strict methodology of Renaissance artist Cennino, with my own inventive techniques, which breaks many of the rigid rules of egg tempera painting. It is my personal standard to create works of art that will last for hundreds of years.
Crushed Rock Pigment:
I formulate and make my own paint from fascinating natural minerals such as crushed lapis lazuli, malachite, slate, and earth ochres hand-picked from quarries in France and Italy. I have recently discovered and am using several new minerals from the Rocky Mountains, which have not been previously used in painting. I have received a grant from the Puffin Foundation to pursue my research into new American minerals.
Fresco & Bas-Relief:
My artwork combines egg tempera painting with bas-relief sculpture. The works are incredibly textural and engage the viewer in a tactile as well as a visual experience. Each element of the artwork is individually sculpted in relief of up to a half inch before being painted in historically correct egg tempera. I am the only artist in North America with this technique.
Why Egg Tempera?
I am captivated not only by the purity and naturalness of this medium, but by the science of it. Each mineral pigment has its own set of properties and capabilities that must be explored. How better to express visions of the earth with anything other than earth itself?
Biography - Linda Paul's original paintings are created in pure egg tempera made from crushed stone & egg yolk. Many of the art works are sculptures as well as paintings. She is the only artist in North America with this technique. This medium lasts for centuries.
Artists Statement
When asked ‘What is your favorite painting’, artist Linda Paul responds, ‘the next one I am going to paint!”
Style: When people ask me what style I paint, its a two part answer that does not fits neatly into any one existing category. My work is a combination of "chunky realism" and impressionist painting. I like to juxtapose sculpted bas-relief products of nature (the chunky part) against soft impressionist landscapes of their origins.
