Artist's Statement -My work stems from an interest in the history of things. This is not to say the immediate history of things, but rather the tangential path history has taken to get things to where they are now. I was brought up in a Jewish home where rather than extracting any deep spiritual or religious practice, I ended up appreciating storytelling and the attempt to understand the past by emulating it through self imposed custom and ritual. Text, liturgy and fable, is a driving force in Judaism and the idea that Jews try to understand the history of themselves as a people (and of man in general) by retracing their own lineage step by step is a fascinating one. In my work I am currently exploring two methods of engaging myself in a secular version of these rich cultural practices. In one I am making work that is exclusively referential of tradition and ritual through object and action, and in the other I am interested in establishing a storytelling practice through the use of devices including but not limited to video. I don’t want to be a storyteller in its most traditional sense, I want to provide viewers with a set of variables with which they may build their own narrative.
I try to use video the way Irwin Wurm or Gabriel Orozco use photography, but with added descriptive elements. My video work is closer to bad theater than to big budget cinema or television in the sense that its craft is obvious, and the descriptive elements are obtuse. These things are an attempt to mimic the descriptive text of fiction writing and prose in a visual forum.
