Artist's Statement -I feel the whole purpose of painting is to go into places within myself that have never been explored and discover new insights and understandings of what its all about, my place in this big picture of existence. Sometimes its easy and sometimes it's hard, but most of the time its worth it. --Charles Swank, November 1999, San Diego

Biography - American Painting: Past to Present--Alluring and enigmatic, Charles Swank's paintings appear to
capture spiritual entities. Proscribed in bars or grids, Swank wholeheartedly treats surfaces baring vaporous fields and harmonious colors. American abstraction of the 1960s started him off and remains in the sphere of his current canvases. Bleeding pigment into unprimed canvas akin to Morris Louis, coloring lush like Larry Poons, reinforcing his work with hard edges bordering on Al Held, Swank has a clear picture in what makes painting a choice means of expression. He studied with Held at Yale, exhibited with
Richard Serra at UCSD in 1970 and the following year at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. --Scott Garland, January 2000, New York City
