Mediums - sculpture

Artist's Statement -Nigredo, is the first stage in the alchemical work. It deals directly with the confused raw mass of the human condition, corresponding to the unrefined state of the unconscious. In a search for parallels between matter and spirit, Nigredo takes shape of a radiant circle, as the Sun or the Moon. A pure geometric form evoking thus, the purity of the material used, wood. The abstract language of the sculpture, refers too objects and shapes in our imaginary, in an almost impossible organic way. But, easily accomplished by art. Daniel Oliveira

Biography - His life has been split between the United States -where he was born in 1975, the Azores -ancestral land, and Lisbon -the city where he graduated, and has been developing his work. We are before an artist of the last generation of sculptors, that has finished his course in the year 2000, at the Lisbon´s Fine Arts College. He presents us a work that is faithful to his personal preocupations and expression, determined by a sober, refined and rational style. His sculptures refer to scientific areas, such as physics, or more spiritual ones, such as alchemy. In his most recent work we are compelled to mention the raw material that is used: wood. The participation in several collective exhibitions evidences the work of this artist, that has exhibit regularly since 1993, passing by the Açores, Lisboa, Odemira, Sintra and Porto. The quality of his work has been recognized, in 2000, by the jury of the 4th edition of the D. Fernando II award, promoted by the Municipality of Sintra, that attributed him the sculpture award. In 2001, Dimensionality, his first solo, at Galeria Municipal de Fitares, Sintra, he discloses us a very interesting and promising set of works of art. Text by J.J.
