ARTIST STATEMENT
As most artists, my work portrays a lifetime of experiences. I grew up in West Texas where I could see the clouds roll in long before they were overhead. The flatness of the land allowed me to see great distances and feel the openness of vast space. I encompass this sense of distance and space to give the viewer more depth into the painting and a strong sense of freedom.
In school, I seem to excel in math and science. With math, every problem has a solution. As with each painting, the solutions are derived from a series of problems. Years of painting provided the experience necessary to solve painting problems. With science, each experiment leads to new discoveries. With each painting, I experiment with design concepts using dynamic symmetry. Each painting is a new discovery.
The mood of each painting is determined by my mood at the time as well as the subject of the painting. My surroundings become the driving force of my art spirit. I strive for color relationships and harmony. I want the color harmony to make the viewer feel that all is right with the universe.
Years of classical violin training play a major roll with my brushwork. I like music that takes me on a ride from fast and furious to slow and mellow, from happy to sad, and leaves me invigorated at the end. I have short and long, up and down, wavy and straight, thin and fat strokes. The variety of my brushwork adds excitement to my work.
I want the viewers of my work to feel the same sense of vast spaces that are fresh and experimental with a strong foundation. Ultimately, I want to take them on the glorious ride of life itself.
Mentally, I work through the complexities of life hoping to find the simplicities at the end.
