Mediums - acrylic on wood and mixed media
Artist's Statement -My work is inspired by the dichotomy I see here in Southern California: amazing natural beauty interrupted by manifestations of globalization and industry.
Moving from New York City to California, I am confronted with mountains, endless expanses of desert, and coastal sunsets. I am also inundated with super highways, telephone lines, and urban sprawl. An amazing sunset seen through telephone lines and buildings is an example of an image which would inspire my art. In my paintings I use acrylics and wood stains, often in geometric shapes, to achieve a contrast with the natural beauty of the wood.
My most recent work explores this juxtaposition of the natural and artificial through contrasting materials in what I call "constructions". Plexiglass, astro-turf, cardboard, wood, and metal are some of the materials I use. Aesthetically, these "constructions" appeal to my love of minimalism. These constructions also convey my environmental consciousness and my awareness of globalization. In "Lawn", for instance, there is a 1/4" of astro-turf stuffed between wood and plexiglass, reflecting our urban landscape. And, a vision of paradise is reduced to a 1970's floral wallpaper print in "Eden".
